An Apology:
There will be no posting for 3 weeks because Tony Ren is preparing a private exhibition for a big tycoon who wanted to see Ren Fu Collection’s last big collection of exquisite Pre-Daoguang Gong Fu tea wares. For privacy reason, we can only say this guest is a well-known Malaysian billionaire.
A Word of Caution:
Tony Ren’s style of writing or narrative are mostly based on hard truths or true facts that came out from lots and lots of graves and tombs. Being from London, Tony Ren is occasionally playful in his writings to make them more exciting and less boring and yet at the same time intellectually austere and truthful which underpinned his strength. Tony Ren’s writing style combines traditional Chinese and a British sense of satire, irreverence and subversion similar to the Americans but all mellowed down to suit world taste. Finally, to avoid censorship in China online platforms, we do not use the name of the President of China but we just use the general phrase ‘President of China’. And for your information, you online followers of our postings are a very fortunate lot because we give you first-hand knowledge of what are contained in Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove even before the professors or PHD researchers of universities do. However a lot of classified archaeological information will only be disclosed to university professors and PHD researchers but will not be disclosed to the public. Some people told us that learning from Ren Fu Collection is like taking an advance course in the subject of Old Zisha Hus and some said that Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove made a lot of books on Old Zisha Hus and even Gong Fu Tea in the market obsolete because they contained many wrong information or worse fake facts.
THE PROFESSORS OF UNIVERSITIES ARE THE LAST BASTION OF HOPE TO SAVE OLD ZISHA HUS AND GONG FU TEA……………………………
How can you study and research Old Zisha Hus when there are so many, many Fake Zisha Hus and how can you study and research Gong Fu Tea when different chajins are practicing their own conflicting version of Gong Fu Teas? Take one example: how do you study and research Chen Ming Yuan or his works when there are hundreds of Fake Chen Ming Yuan Zisha Pots around especially in auctions, big collections, books and even museums? Or how do you study or learn about Old Zisha Hus or Old Master Potters works when there are so many “Conversion Books” written by unscrupulous, fraudulent scholars?( Conversion Books are books containing Fake Zisha Pots mixed with Old Pots and written by fraudulent scholars to convert the Fake Pots into genuine Old Pots)
We all know Tony Ren have written about the three waves of forgeries: the first wave of forgeries was in Mingguo when a few unscrupulous Shanghai dealers got some contemporary Master Potters to make copies of Old Master Potters’ works and marketed them as genuine Old Masters Potters’.The second wave of forgeries was when droves of Taiwanese fraudsters descended on Yixing in the 1980s to make Fake Zisha Hus for sale as genuine Old Zisha Pots. The third and most devastating wave, which is still happening now and which we have written a lot about, is the most frightful, the most out of control and the most destructive which is threatening the very existence of Old Zisha Hus in which some experts say the market is now 99% Fake Zisha Pots. The very fact that all auctions in mainland China now have Fake Zisha Pots or many famous Zisha Hu historians cannot differentiate between what is and what is not a Fake Zisha Pot or the fact that organized fraudsters have infiltrated museums, auction houses, learning institutions online or brick and mortars, indicated a very frightening catastrophic future. And that is not to mention the chaotic professors and scholars with their conflicting theories like for example the well-known Taiwanese scholar Huang Qian Liang claiming Hui Meng Chen was Early Qing and the Hong Kong’s world famous Professor Lai Suk Yee claiming Hui Meng Chen was definitely Late Ming.( when Tony Ren last spoke to her, Professor Lai was still adamant that Hui Meng Chen was Late Ming)
And we will tell you what the rest of the world especially the West, think when the Chinese claim they have created a great tea art called Gong Fu Tea in Early Kangxi or the Chinese claim they have invented a very super superior teapot called Yixing teapot in Late Ming: they, the West, do not believe the Chinese-why?
Because nobody will believe in the greatness of Yixing teapot when all they get or hear nowadays are Fake Yixing teapots everywhere or nobody will believe in the greatness of Gong Fu Tea when different chajins practice conflicting Gong Fu Teas not to mention some unscrupulous chajins using fake Yixing teapots which are toxic and producing bad inferior tea.The situation is so bad and alarming that the West just ignores or ridiculed or even lampooned the Chinese claims as exaggerated and wishful thinking without merit and so do not deserve any attention as witnessed in the research findings of Professor Jean DeBernardi of Alberta University, Canada recently in which she refuted and rubbished China’s claim that Gong Fu Tea ever existed in history let alone the greatest tea art in the world. In fact it’s not only that Professor but a lot of Western art historians who do not believe in the Chinese claims.Yes, we Chinese have brought it upon ourselves due to the greed and ill-intentions of our own bad Chinese forgers and organized fraudsters who churned out lots and lots of Fake Zisha Pots in the market and in the process threatening the very existence of Old Zisha Hus and also Gong Fu Tea.Therefore the good Chinese among us have to do something to save Old Zisha Hus and Gong Fu Tea or else these Old Potters or Gong Fu Tea creators will turn in their graves over what the bad Chinese have done and are still doing to their precious creations.
But Tony Ren or Ren Fu Collection alone is not enough to fight all those thousands of fraudsters selling Fake Pots and forgers creating Fake Pots.
Which means, short of going to the President of China for help, we need the help from the most uncorrupted, most untainted most academic of places: the university professors and PHD researchers which is the last bastion of hope to save Old Zisha Hus and Gong Fu Tea.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the world, as you know Ren Fu Collection has a huge archaeological trove of tea leaves, teapots and tea wares and the time has come to choose a few good, honest and uncorrupted professors in universities around the world to help us save Old Zisha Hus and Gong Fu Tea and we will give them the most powerful weapon to fight these Fake Zisha Hus and Fake Gong Fu Tea chajins.
Today we are very happy to discuss a Professor among others to be mentioned later, whom we think has great integrity and great investigative and research skills. Why does he have great investigative and research skills? Simple: we have spoken to a lot of professors but this one Professor stands out like a beacon in the huge ocean of professors. Because from the moment we read his mind and saw his works, we immediately know he is the one to help save Gong Fu Tea. We were watching him for a while and saw what he wrote and he wrote about Gong Fu Tea as if he was there in the Transition Period(1620-1683) studying and researching Gong Fu Tea or jokingly the amazing Professor must have X-Ray eyes to penetrate and access our huge archaeological trove of Gong Fu tea wares without us knowing it. In fact, truth be told, no professors have come this close to finding Gong Fu Tea( and in an indirect way to finding the most elusive Old Master Potter Hui Meng Chen and his legendary Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot). Yes, the Professor was ‘that close’ to finding Gong Fu Tea and we know it because we happened to have the world’s largest archaeological trove of Pre-Daoguang Gong Fu tea wares.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the world, we give you Professor Yan Li-Ren, formerly of Xiamen University, and Ladies and Gentlemen, we share with you too the Professor’s startling mental dexterity and his masterful articulation of his theory of Gong Fu Tea. Here are the Professor’s profound use of allegory or metaphors, which sums up, for all intent and purposes, what Gong Fu Tea was about.
The professor’s first allegory: Gong Fu Tea was like a baby born without a name and later had a name which became very famous.
And the professor’s second allegory: more than 400 years ago, Zisha teapot and oolong tea met unexpectedly in Southern Fujian, and they went hand in hand, giving birth to Gong Fu Tea.
But it will have to take more than allegorical brilliance for the Professor, however amazing or exceptional he is, to convince the rest of the world especially the West, who are suspicious and skeptical of Chinese claims, that he has found Gong Fu Tea.
Well, no problems!, Ren Fu Collection has the largest archaeological trove of Pre-Daoguang Gong Fu tea wares and we will help Professor Yan Li-Ren.
(As an aside we think the Professor’s two allegorical depictions of Gong Fu Tea should be one of the best Chinese tea culture research findings catch phrases of the 21st century and Ren Fu Collection’s archaeological trove should be one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 21st century)
Notwithstanding Professor Yan Li-Ren’s contributions, the other aim of Ren Fu Collection is to involve as many professors and PHD researchers of universities around the world as possible in order to break the monopoly of, if not put pressure to bear on undesirable elements linked to organized frauds who have infiltrated auction houses and even museums, some of whom are prolific scholars who wrote a lot of “conversion books” to convert the Fake Zisha Pots in their books to genuine ‘Old Zisha Pots’ so that the Fake Zisha Pots can be sold in all auction houses as genuine ‘Old Zisha Pots’ and importantly too, to stop the influence of corrupted, fraudulent scholars in mainstream educational discourse on Old Zisha Hus. In other words, when more and more professors and PHD researchers learn from our huge collection of exact-dated Pots, they will acquire the knowledge of being able to differentiate between old Pots and Fake Pots just like one Taiwanese old-hand used to say, “It is very easy to learn with Ren Zhuni Collection’s huge archaeological trove: any Pot in the market that is different from Ren Fu Collection’s Pots must be a fake”.
第一波赝品是在民国,当时一些不法的上海商贩找来当代陶艺大师仿制古典陶艺家的作品,并冒充古典陶艺家的真品进行销售;
第二波造假浪潮是80年代,大批台湾骗子涌入宜兴,将假老紫砂壶冒充真品老紫砂壶出售;
SHALL WE TELL THE PRESIDENT OF CHINA ???………………………………………………………..
Western Arts historians, even tea culture historians, have acknowledged the height of European Chinoiserie craze was during Emperor Qian Long’s reign and in China, according to Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove, Emperor Qian Long’s reign also saw the height of Zhuni Hus and Gong Fu Tea, otherwise called the Golden Age of Zisha Hus and the Golden Age of Gong Fu Tea respectively, where the Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot was at the center.
China under the scholarly Emperor Qian Long witnessed the height of Gong Fu Tea as evident in Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove of fine, exquisite Qian Long period Gong Fu tea wares; and the height of Zhuni Hus, a Golden Age made possible by the invention of the small Zhuni Pot by Hui Meng Chen in Shunzhi, as evident in the ubiquitous fine and exquisite Qian Long period excavated Zhuni Pots, most of which were Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pots. Some experts who have seen Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove of Meng Chen Zhuni Pots say Hui Meng Chen possibly discovered the practical use of Zhuni clays and the advantage of using the small Zhuni Pot in Shunzhi or even late Chongzhen). And Hui Meng Chen’s invention of the legendary Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pots did not go unnoticed because a lot of unearthed and archaeologically excavated Zhuni Pots indicated a posthumous recognition of Hui Meng Chen’s invention of the small Zhuni Pot. Firm and clear archaeological proofs in Ren Fu Collection’s many excavated small Qian Long 8th Year reign-mark Meng Chen Zhuni Pots and even a 13rd Year Qian Long reign-mark Meng Chen Zhuni Pot found in the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong testify to the truth of our claim. Besides these Emperor Qian Long reign-mark Zhuni Pots are never seen in any other Old Potters Zisha Hus, be they Old Potters, Old Famous Potter’s or Old Master Potters’- except only in the Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pots( and not even the great Shi Da Bin or Chen Ming Yuan Zisha Pots have Emperor’s reign-mark), and what is interesting about these Qian Long 8th Year reign-mark Meng Chen Zhuni Pots was the fact that they were all excavated from the tombs or graves of GuangRen or their wives. Yes, in Emperor Qian Long’s reign, there appears to be a colossal and awesome trend which took place in Zisha Hu collecting and Gong Fu Tea drinking where the shape, size and form of teapots were dictated or if not, at least influenced by the Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot that Hui Meng Chen invented in Shunzhi.( as proven by the fact that almost all of our excavated Qian Long period cultural relics were Gong Fu tea wares with a small or downsized Zhuni Pot and 80% of the excavated Gong Fu tea wares have a Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot). And of course we know now, thanks to Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove, the invention of the Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot sparked off a domino-effect of tea wares downsizing especially tea wares pertaining to Gong Fu Tea whereby big teapot, like the characteristic Late Ming Zisha Pots, were made small using Zhuni clays and big chawan became small teacups( even big Gaiwan(big lidded tea bowls) became small Gaiwan( small lidded tea bowls); and including the addition of a small dish(tea boat), small water boiler(kettle) and small burner(stove) which were collectively called Gong Fu tea wares comprising five tea utensils.
But sadly Gong Fu Tea disappeared from the radar screen of history as suddenly and as quietly as it appeared in Early Kangxi leaving only ‘shadows’ of its greatness in everyday Chinese tea drinking life. Despite attempts to find Gong Fu Tea or the legendary Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot or the most elusive Old Master Potter Hui Meng Chen, their identities are still shrouded in great mystery until today prior to Ren Fu Collection’s archaeological discoveries: why?
One reason was the Transition Period(1620-1683), which started after the death of Ming Emperor Wanli and ended when Qing Emperor Kangxi recaptured Taiwan- a period where Jingdezhen was officially closed for business(including other famous kilns) and even when there were clandestine ceramic/porcelain production, nothing was written about or documented making any study and research impossible. The second reason was the catastrophic NanMing wars(1644-1683) where not only there was civil wars and famous kilns were officially closed for business but there was an exodus of mainland Chinese notably the Fujians and Guangdong people to Nanyang to escape the wars. The third but lesser reason was the Opium wars.which, even though they were not the direct cause, did put the final nails on the coffin of Gong Fu Tea history and making any study and research difficult because of foreign invasions and opium addiction was everywhere in China. However despite all that, there were several attempts made in the recent and early past to try to discover Gong Fu Tea, the legendary Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot and the most elusive Old Master Potter Hui Meng Chen which together we called “ The Mysterious Trinity”.
The first was a seemingly lukewarm attempt to find Gong Fu Tea and the Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot which is found in the “Min Suo Yi” written by Peng Guang Dou in 1766( Qian Long 31st Year reign), an ex-magistrate of Tong’an, Fujian and in it the author described seeing old men drinking Wuyi tea in small teapots everywhere in Longxi( present day Zhangzhou and the first mention of Laorencha or old man’s tea). Later in his datum- Famous Pottery of YangXian”- the author Wu Qian(1733-1813) said, “ I have studied Meng Chen and I have got a teapot with ‘Made by Meng Chen’ and several other Chinese characters on its bottom but I have no idea of Hui Meng Chen’s living age”. Then 30 years after Peng Guang Dou’s “Min Suo Yi” a challenge to Fujian’s original Gong Fu Tea invention was made by Yu Jiao in his book, “ A Miscellaneous of Chaoshan” in which he described the best way to make Congou tea was to obey Lu Yu’s tea ceremony but with more exquisite tea set.( a first clue that Gong Fu Tea was a tea ceremony too besides tea art and Cha Dao). Li Fang of the Qing Dynasty, who wrote a book called “ YangXian Potters” and in it was described during his childhood he was given a teapot with a Made by Meng Chen of Wenxing shop Chinese characters on the bottom and nothing else to suggest who was Hui Meng Chen except that it was a copy. Next comes the Japanese Ao Lantian who studied Yixing pottery in China who could only write in his book which was completed in 1878, “ Collections of Teapot Pictures-Origination”: It’s hard to trace the living time of Hui Meng Chen”. Or the near past where the Taiwanese historian Lian Heng(1878-1936) glorified the Meng Chen pot by saying Gong Fu Tea must have a Meng Chen Pot and Meng Chen Pot was the most highly priced. In 1934, Li Jing Kang and Zhang Hong compiled the “ A Pictorial Study of YangXian Pottery Teapots” which in it they described everything they know (or guessed) about Hui Meng Chen and his small Zhuni Pots but still did not know anything about Hui Meng Chen and his small Zhuni Pots. The list goes on and of course the contemporary Taiwanese scholar Huang Qian Liang tried his luck to find Hui Meng Chen and concluded Hui Meng Vhen must be Early Qing and the famous Professor Lai Suk Yee of Hong Kong and Teresa Tse Bartholomew of the US reasoned Hui Meng Chen must be Late Ming by the fact that there is a Hui Meng Chen Tianqi 7th year reign Zisha Pot in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Fortunately the mainland Chinese Professor Yan Li-Ren has it quite right when he claims Gong Fu Tea originated in Zhangzhou, Fujian which is where our huge archaeological trove proved Gong Fu Tea came from but if the Professor wants to know why and how Gong Fu Tea was born, and what was the original Early Qing Gong Fu Tea, he has only to search through and analyze Ren Fu Collection’s huge archaeological trove.
The search for Gong Fu Tea continues notwithstanding Professor Yan LiRen’ wonderful research works, and you will never, in a million years, guess the next high profile gentleman we will include in the list of highly acclaimed people who were or are searching for the Holy Grail of Chinese tea culture, namely the Gong Fu Tea so be ready for the surprise or even shock with what we are going to say next?
Ladies and Gentlemen of the world we give you the most sensational and highest profile of Gong Fu Tea seeker or hunter whichever you might prefer,: the President of China, His Excellency himself!( to avoid censorship we do not use the name of the President). Yes, yes the great present President of China.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, roughly 287 years after the scholarly Emperor Qian Long otherwise called the Ruler of China, who must have loved Gong Fu Tea, glorified Hui Meng Chen and bestowing posthumous recognition upon Hui Meng Chen’s revolutionary work , the legendary Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot, as our many excavated Qian Long 8th Year reign-mark Meng Chen Zhuni Pots can attest to; there is now another Ruler of China who also loves Gong Fu Tea and wants the Chinese nation to search and find Gong Fu Tea and put it in UNESCO’s List of Intangible World Cultural Heritage which will help China’s peaceful rise to greatness. His Excellency was the ex-Governor of Fujian for 17 and a half years and during His Excellency’s tenure in Fujian, he always loved drinking Gong Fu Tea and still does now especially, we were told, when His Excellency is entertaining visiting Heads of State.(even we were told His Excellency’s only daughter makes Gong Fu Tea for her father to show filial piety).
This present President of China is very concern with the lost of Gong Fu Tea in history, the greatest of China’s soft power, that His Excellency wants to bring back the great glory days of China’s greatest tea culture the world have ever seen in the Early Qing period especially in Emperor Qian Long’s reign. And like the great Emperor Qian Long, His Excellency wants to restore Gong Fu Tea to its rightful place. And we, the world, must thank Heaven, that we have a great Chinese President now who wants to restore and bring back the greatest renaissance in tea culture history not only to China but to the whole world……which begs the next great question!
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen of the world, it now begs this audacious question:
SHALL WE TELL THE PRESIDENT OF CHINA ABOUT REN FU COLLECTION’S ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY OF GONG FU TEA?
Stay tuned to our stories for new developments and the latest news!
On behalf of Ren Fu Collection we wish every Chinese in the world especially Professor Yan Li-Ren “ A Most Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year”.
P/s..Some experts say it is very difficult to find just one archaeological Holy Grail let alone three archaeological Holy Grails but Ren Fu Collection’s great feat of finding Gong Fu Tea, the legendary Small Meng Chen Zhuni Pot and the most elusive Old Master Potter Hui Meng Chen will be remembered as one of the all-time greatest archaeological discoveries of the 21st century. And a few experts said that a book, a documentary and a movie should be done about the three great archaeological discoveries. By the way, they have done a movie about Gu Zing Zhou but Hui Meng Chen after this archaeological discoveries will be classified as a giant of all Potters-whether old or contemporary.
